Wellesley Cooperative Preschool

The Wellesley and District Cooperative Preschool is a community resource providing families with an opportunity to enhance a child’s intellectual, emotional, social and physical development through exploration and discovery in a nurturing and safe environment.

How cooperative preschools work? +

The Wellesley Cooperative Preschool offers parents the opportunity to be involved with their child’s education on every level.  At a cooperative school, parents’ contributions make a difference both in the classroom and “behind the scenes”. With parents fulfilling roles in the operation of the school, we are able to keep fees less than other private schools, while maintaining excellent programs for our children.

About Us +

About Us

The Wellesley and District Cooperative Preschool started in September, 1987 by a group of parents in Wellesley who were eager to find a place where their children could learn and become more independent.   The program continues today with families attending from Waterloo, the town of Wellesley and surrounding townships including Perth County. The Wellesley and District Cooperative Preschool is funded in part by the Region of Waterloo.

Our Program +

Student Ages 2.5 to 5 year olds

The emphasis at Wellesley Cooperative Preschool is on play and socialization. Our goal is to promote a positive self-image, self-confidence and social skills. Subtle learning is incorporated into everyday activities.  Several field trips are arranged to support our programming and enhance your child’s school experience.

An enrolled child must be 2 ½ years of age when he/she starts preschool, unless the teacher and board have granted special permission.  There will be space for up to 3 children per class who are between the age of 24 and 30 months.  Children may be registered anytime during the school year until all spots have been filled.

School Year and Holidays

Our school operates from September to the middle of June. We follow the same holiday schedule as the Waterloo Region District School Board. This includes the Christmas holiday, March Break and other statutory holidays. We operate during Professional Activity (PA) days.

A Parent's or Guardian's Role

In a cooperative preschool, parents play many important roles.  They join as a team to provide an enriching environment for their children to learn and grow.  Most parents/guardians participate as a teacher helper and help with other duties, etc.  However, there may be parents who choose not to or are unable to participate in the classroom or in housekeeping duties, etc.  Families can enrol their child(ren) in a partial participating or non-participating position.  The following chart outlines the duties associated with the various levels of participation:

Associate Memberships

An associate membership is available for families who have a one year gap in between children attending preschool.  Associate membership allows families to maintain communication with the Preschool during the year before their next child registers.  It also enables a member who was a qualified duty parent in the preceding year to continue to do duty days.

  • In the Classroom

Alongside our experienced ECE teacher, Wellesley Cooperative Preschool parents and guardians take turns helping out in the classroom on a rotating basis. On your “duty day” in the classroom you will see your child’s development; you will share in your child’s daily experience and see the Wellesley Cooperative Preschool program at work.

  • Board of Directors and Committee Jobs

All families share the responsibility of getting the tasks of the Wellesley Cooperative Preschool done. You will hold a position on a school committee or on our parent Board of Directors. From guiding school planning on the Board to helping with fundraising, planning special events or evening classroom cleaning and toy washing – there is a preschool job to meet every member’s schedule and interest.

  • General Meetings

All families also participate in two General Meetings each school year, before school starts (August) and in the spring (May). These meetings are where you exercise your vote on matters relating to the operation of the Wellesley Cooperative Preschool, so a parent or guardian is required to attend. General Meetings give you valuable information which will enhance your understanding of the preschool. They are also a great a place to meet and interact with the other parents.
